It was exactly a month ago today that the iPad first found its way into customers’ hands, and already Apple has blithely traipsed past the million sales mark. The auspicious 3G iPad was first sold on Friday, just 28 days after its introduction. The company previously sold 300,000 of the Wi-Fi-only iPads in its first day of availability, including pre-orders.

“One million iPads in 28 days–that’s less than half of the 74 days it took to achieve this milestone with iPhone,” said Apple CEO Steve Jobs in a statement. “Demand continues to exceed supply and we’re working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more customers.”

The original iPhone may be a good barometer for the iPad’s success, though it’s worth noting that subsequent versions such as the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3GS each hit the same milestone in their first weekend. But the iPad, even more so than the iPhone, is a device in an unproven, entirely novel category, which makes the accomplishment all the more impressive.

Plus, the iPad sales bring with it sales of additional products: iPad users have already downloaded more than 12 million applications and more than 1.5 million e-books from the iBookstore. And the number of iPad-specific apps continues to rise, with Apple’s latest figure topping 5,000.

If nothing else, one million sales would seem to validate the iPad as a product. We’ll have to wait until Apple’s next quarterly results in July to see how it plays out for the company’s bottom line, but until then, have no fear: analysts will no doubt fill that vacuum with endless amounts of speculation.

Finally, the company acknowledges the much-talked-about handset

Nokia has finally accepted and acknowledged the existence of its next generation Symbian smartphone – the N8. The phone has had its specifications leaked just a day ago and it seems, Nokia has had enough. The company has announced the phone officially. The N8 has been in the news lately and it was just yesterday that the first reviews of the handset surfaced. Just a few hours later, a document detailing the phones spec sheet was revealed.

Unlike the last Symbian based flagship, the N97, the N8 runs the latest version of the Symbian OS – Symbian ^3. While they share quite a few visual cues, S60 Version5 and Symbian^3 are two different operating systems. Symbian^3 supports multitouch (although as of now we’re unsure if it has been used effectively on the N8), flick scrolling and pinch-zoom. The Nokia N8 also offers multiple, personalizable homescreens which can be loaded with apps and widgets. The new 2D and 3D graphics architecture in the platform takes full advantage of the Nokia N8′s hardware acceleration to deliver a faster and more responsive user interface. Symbian^3 also raises the bar in performance by delivering greater memory management allowing more applications to run in parallel for a faster multi-tasking experience. It remains to be seen how much of an actual enhancement does Symbian^3 bring to the end user experience.

The N8 is fully social networking ready. Users can update their status, share location and photos, and view live feeds from Facebook and Twitter in a single app directly on the home screen. Calendar events from social networks can also be transferred to the device calendar.

The phone has a 3.5-inch capacitive screen with a 360×640 resolution. While the resolution might not be very high compared to Android based devices, the AMOLED display will make it look quite impressive. The device in its prototype avatar had a non standard sized HDMI port, we seriously hope this has been rectified in the final version. Even with all these features, the phone manges to stay quite slim at just 12.9 mm thin!

The N8 will be available in select markets during the third quarter of 2010. It is estimated to be priced at around the EUR 370 (Rs. 22,000) mark. This is the price minus taxes or subsidies. Also, it would be outright foolish to expect this phone to be priced below the 25k mark in India – so don’t get your hopes too high.

Leaked photo’s of Dells new Windows 7 powered phone makes one ask, will it be a real contender? The photo’s and specification have been posted by Engadget and the new phone from Dell is intriguing. Here are some shots of what it will look like:

Here’s the specs on the phone:

1 GHz Snapdragon processor

4.1″ OLED screen

AT&T and T-Mobile 3G

5 megapixel camera

1 GB flash with 512MB RAM plus 8 GB storage on MicroSD card

GPS, Accelerometer, compass. FM radio

Full flash support. (Thought Engadget notes Microsoft has said it won’t support flash at launch.)

Will Dell be able to pull off a coup against rivals such as Apple’s iPhone and the latest Android powered phones? I personally believe that Dell will be fighting an uphill battle. Apple’s iPhone will remain the dominate device that all others will be compared to.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Now that people have been playing with Google Buzz in Gmail for a week and Google have rolled out the improvements they announced in their blog over the weekend, Google wanted to let you know about some tips and tricks to help you get the most out of Buzz. Here are five tips to get you started:
1. Format your posts. When posting in Buzz, you can format text just as you can in Gmail chat: *bold*, _italics_, or -strikethrough- all work.

2. View a summary of your own Buzz activity at www.google.com/dashboard. TheGoogle Dashboard provides a private, consolidated summary of the data associated with your Google account, as well as direct links to control your personal settings. As of today, Buzz has its own section on the Dashboard, so you can see how many people you’re following, how many people are following you, and information about your recent posts, comments, and likes. You can also access your Buzz settings right there on the page.

3. Use an @reply to send a post directly to someone’s inbox. If you want to make sure one of your friends sees a certain Buzz post, you can direct it to their inbox with an @reply. Type the “@” symbol followed by the first few letters of their name, and select their email address from the list. Only you’ll see their Gmail address — other people will just see their name.

4. Try keyboard shortcuts to fly through buzz. Turn on keyboard shortcuts from Settings, and use “j” or “n” to scroll down the buzz tab, “k” or “p” to go back up, “r” to comment (same shortcut as reply in Gmail), and “shift + l” to like.

5. Mute posts so they don’t get sent to your inbox. Comments on your posts and comments after your comments send buzz directly to your inbox. If you don’t want a lively conversation to keep appearing in your inbox as people reply to it, you can mute it. Click the arrow in the corner of a buzz post and select “Mute this post.”

If you have keyboard shortcuts turned on, you can also mute buzz that appears in your inbox by hitting the “m” key while you’re reading it.

Check out Google’s Help Center for more tips and answers to your common questions, and stay tuned for more here as well.
